Centre for Eye Health

The Centre for Eye Health is a purpose-built facility that will allow eye care services and training to be expanded in Papua New Guinea.

The Centre located at Port Moresby General Hospital will deliver eye care services to the public and support the expansion and training of eye care specialists and ophthalmologists’ side-by-side in the dedicated facility while providing a central base for the local eye care team to conduct outreaches to rural provinces; and provide a clinic dedicated to diabetic retinopathy and paediatric ophthalmology services.

The new 2350m2 facility is over two levels with the reception, eye clinic and outpatients’ surgical facility located on the ground floor with administration offices and teaching spaces located on the upper floor. The centre has 12 consulting rooms, four investigation rooms and a procedure room along with two operating rooms on the ground floor and can be expanded in the future to accommodate an additional operating room and consult rooms. The design incorporates several climate-proofing and energy-efficient strategies including an off-grid solar panel system, high insulation values and shading, demand control ventilation, rainwater harvesting and simple robust systems.
