In the Mount Albert Campus of Plant and Food Research stands a beautiful Art Deco structure that counts as the oldest Laboratory building in New Zealand.
We were tasked with re-purposing this building into offices, generous meeting rooms above and a large café, designed to allow scientists and ideas to mingle. The removal of the ceiling exposed a structure of corbelled beams and the Deco stair was restored.
For the exterior shell, the steel windows have been repaired, the roof replaced and the walls seismically strengthened with a layer of sprayed concrete on the inside.
‘..a model of restoration: a charming, fully functional and future proofed mid-century building that staff, clearly, love to hang out in…’
